These melting massage, bath and shower bars are fantastic! I wanted to create a healthy, all-natural massage bar that melted onto the skin when rubbed. I came up with the easiest and most luxurious recipes!
The base of these bars is extra virgin coconut oil. We all know of the amazing health benefits of coconut oil. It is fantastic for the skin. Extra virgin coconut oil is a solid at room temperature so this makes the perfect combination for the base of our massage bars.
These melting bars are amazing for body massages, using in your bath, rubbing on in the shower or just to apply your daily body moisturizer. These are also a perfect gift for the Holidays! You can wrap these in ribbons and place them in a fabric bag for a really unique DIY Christmas Gift.
To make these bars you will need silicone molds. You can use any size or shape you wish. I used some that were heart shaped that were about 1/4 cup and others that were silicone chocolate molds that were about 1 tbsp. Whatever size you wish will work. If you don’t have any silicone molds you can always us an ice cube tray.
Below I’m going to explain how to create massage bars, exfoliant bars and bath bars. Mix and match the flavors and scents as you choose. There is truly something for everyone!
Massage & Bath Bars Using Essential Oils
To create your bars you are going to use a medium sauce pan on the lowest heat. Add your coconut oil and let it melt. If you are using essential oils simply add 7-10 drops of the essential oils, mix completely, pour into your molds and place in the freezer. Let these set for 30 minutes. Then remove your bars and place them in a sealed-tight container. If they are for you keep them in your refrigerator until your use them for optimal freshness. In the shower make sure to store these in a covered soap dish or sealed-tight container. If you make the 1 tbsp size these will be for one-time use but if you make the larger sizes you can store and re-use.
If you are creating these bars to use as your daily body butter it is best just to create them using essential oils mixed with coconut oil. If you are using these as massage bars still store them in sealed-tight containers when not using them. They are a great daily body butter.
Shower & Bath Bars Using Herbs or Teas
If you are using herbs, teas or flowers use the previous directions but let your herbs simmer in the coconut oil on the low heat for 5-10 minutes before pouring into the mold. This is to let the herbs blend into the oil. Using herbs, teas or flowers is best for the bath or shower bars. This way there will be no sediment left on your skin.
Exfoliating Bath Bars
Create your exfoliating Bath Bars using a coarse sea salt and/or raw sugar. Simply use the instructions above but before pouring the oil into your molds fill your mold up 1/3 of the way with your sugar and salt mixture. Then top with your oil.
How to Create Fragrance Blends with Essential Oils
Creating your scents is up to your personal taste. Just keep in mind certain fragrances work well together while others do not. If you are doing these as a gift using universal scents is highly recommended. When working with essential oils something to keep in mind is that they are very strong – 7-10 drops per massage bar is all you need. Mix and match these oils to what suits you.
Here are some ideas of fragrance blends for your massage, bath or shower bars:
- Sweet Orange Oil and Vanilla
- Bergamot and Grapefruit
- Green Tea and Ginger
- Cinnamon, Sweet Orange and Vanilla

Looks great! Just wondering, how do you keep the bars firm? My coconut oil is a bit soft at room temperature…
Hey Aisling! At room temp they should be firm. If you worry about it you can keep these in the fridge between uses. This also keeps the oils fresh!
What are the amounts for the ingredients? A lot of us have been asking. Ty.
can you replace the coconut with Shea?
What are the measurements for all of the ingredients?
I still do not see an answer for the measurements used.usually people want to make a quantity to have on hand or for gifting. Thank you!!
I am from South Africa. We use organic coconut oil in all our cooking. In the summer my tub of oil is liquid. I would like to know how you keep you bars from melting?
Hey Samantha! Here is Canada this is not an issue like it would be for you. You could keep yours in the fridge! That would work 🙂
Try adding beeswax to make them more resistant to melting.
Can I adjust the recipe to make more liquid to use in squeeze tubes/containers like a lotion?
i added soy wax to mine to stop it from melting so quickly
what are the measurements? How much coconut oil, etc.? I am making as gifts and would like to make a batch Thank you!
